The National Movement Against Terrorism (NMAT) yesterday pointed to the rising voice of the people now calling the government to defeat the LTTE militarily under the present circumstances without any peace talks or foreign intervention. The movement said that they had organised a protest rally tomorrow afternoon at Borella to urge the government to completely destroy the Tigers, as the time has come to rise and come forward to take responsibility of our own lives. "It is evident from last Friday's carnage at the Ayurvedic Junction that the Tigers are using heavy weapons in the Colombo City and this proves there is no proper security programme operative here. "Tiger terrorists are hiding with the Tamil people. It has become difficult to carry out a proper security programme due to interference from Tamil politicians and the government," said NMAT Co-ordinating Secretary Kamal Deshapriya. "The intention of the terrorists is to win their demands by killing more and more," he stressed. "Therefore, the time has come to air the people's voice, demanding the authorities to crush and finish the LTTE. We should pressurise not only the government but also the opposition," he said. "We should also demand for a proper security programme in the city'" he added. The Eksath Sinhala Maha Saba too had very strongly condemned the acts of terrorism in Sri Lanka and has issued a press release urging the government to give up peace talks. "Eliminate terrorism by military action give a free hand to our brave forces" the release stated. They also urged the government and the opposition to see what the peace process has in store for the people when the LTTE is the side who is benefiting with their brutal attacks. Political observers explained that the people are becoming frustrated from the frequent brutal LTTE attacks targeted at the civilians. The nonchalant attitude of the international community has been a result of the LTTE covert operations to disguise their brutality that are directed at civilians to achieve their missions, they said. However, the PA government has been the only ruling party who has seen the problem from both angles. Therefore, government sources stated that they would do their best to accelerate the peace process since the worth of peace would much more fruitful than the cost of war.
