SLMC demands minority representation in UNP delegation
[15 Mar 2000]

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has made a request to UNP leader to include minority representation in future delegations to talks with the government on constitutional reform.

SLMC General Secretary and Deputy Chairman of Committee Rauf Hakeem told that his party's request was an appeal to include Tamil and Muslim representatives in the opposition party delegation.

"The UNP, being the alternative government in the country, should contribute towards the constitutional reform process in a meaningful manner".

He stated that they all expect the UNP to represent all ethnic communities in the country as the government is making a concerted effort to restore peace.

The minorities should be represented by a person like late Mr. A.CV.S. Hameed who had a depth of knowledge and understanding on all aspects of the issue, he said.

Mr. Hakeem referring to the UNP's past policies said that the UNP used to observe certain norms earlier but after the demise of Mr. Hameed this was not continued.

"If they are short of leaders of such a caliber, they even can appoint a person outside the political ranks, as they nominated Mr. Swaminathan on several other occasions" he added.
