Batticaloa pass system appeal unlikely to succeed
[16 Mar 2000]

An appeal has also been made to President Kumaratunga by a Tamil Society in eastern province requesting the government not to implement its controversial new pass system for citizens of Batticaloa district.

However, government sources said that in view of the recent spate of terrorist attacks, the appeal was unlikely to be successful.

The Batticaloa Pass system was proposed after continuous confirmation reports that almost every Tiger suicide bomber were hailing from Batticaloa where movement control measures are weak, official sources said.

The LTTE suspects and their accomplices under the custody of police have confessed the infiltration to the Colombo City and its suburbs from Batticaloa.

When the pass system was introduced, Tamil and Muslim political parties protested against the proposal defending the Tamil civilians who would undergo difficulties.

However, military officials ruled this out after evidence of Tiger infiltration from Batticaloa was revealed, which has become a massive threat against the public.

Security officials commenting on the lack of support from the minority community in the eastern area stated that the proposed system should be implemented without any delay to curb Tiger attempts aimed at disrupting the peace effort until at least the peace process gets under way.
