Government prevention programmes reduce suicide rate
[16b Mar 2000]

The number of suicides in Sri Lanka has dropped during the past few years, putting the country lower on the list of countries with high rate suicides, reported a task force appointed by President Kumaratunga at a Progress Review meeting on Prevention of Suicide.

As a result of various prevention programmes especially in the rural areas, the social workers were able to reach out with counseling services to those who have had suicidal feelings.

The Task Force has been studying ways to create a culture that discourages suicide. A more practical measure has examined such as reducing access to poisons and pesticides.

The media has also gave special coverage for outreach work to touch those feeling suicidal to talk about their emotions and for others to recognize symptoms.
