Tiger suspect smuggling explosives in TV sets arrested [16 Mar 2000]

An LTTE suspect who is alleged to have smuggled explosives to Colombo hidden in television sets was arrested yesterday in Perattasi Estate, Pussellawa.

The 27-year-old suspect coming from Battacaloa is alleged to have planted a 5 kg bomb on the rail track at Radella targeting the night mail to Badulla about a month ago.

Police said that the he had transported the explosives hidden inside TV sets on several occasions and handed them over to a Tiger leader in Colombo.

It was revealed during the investigations that the Tiger suspect had worked in a barber saloon in Grandpass and when police cordoned off the area for a search operation he had managed to escape to his native place in Batticaloa with an accomplice called Ravi.

When the two were returning to Colombo, Ravi was arrested at a Welikanda police check point but the newly arrested suspect had managed to slip through to the estate where he was arrested.
