On Friday in Chavakechcheri, Jaffna, civilian labourer Kanagaratnam Madiyabarawan was shot dead by the LTTE while harvesting in a paddy field. The
LTTE had been attacking civilians who harvest paddy in order to bring
hardship to people living within Security Forces controlled areas. On the
same day around 4 pm in Madduvil, Jaffna, security forces on patrol were
attacked by terrorists with hand grenades. Two students, both aged sixteen,
and a seventy-year-old lady were injured in the attack. Three soldiers suffered minor injuries. Troops counter attacked,
killing two terrorists. The
injured students and the lady were evacuated to Chavakachcheri Hospital
for treatment by the Army. Since the conditions of the students were
critical they were transferred to Jaffna Teaching Hospital. During
a subsequent search, troops recovered two terrorist bodies along with
cyanide capsules and three hand grenades. The two dead bodies were handed
over to Jaffna Police and are now at Jaffna Hospital.
