Police urge vigilance against LTTE infiltration
[20 Mar 2000]

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant in the face of persistent Tiger infiltration from outstation areas and mixing among the Colombo civilian population.

"We have intensified investigations especially among the Tamil civilians since the terrorists are using them to hide. This in turn had created difficulties to the innocent Tamil civilians who are caught in the middle from both sides," police authorities said.

Fifty Tiger suspects were taken in to custody in a joint army/police operation yesterday in Colombo City.

Under interrogation, many of those arrested admitted they had not registered their residences. Many of the suspects are youths originating from Batticaloa, Jaffna and upcountry areas.

Meanwhile, a Tamil youth of Akkaraipattu area employed in a tourist hotel in Matara was also arrested by police.

Earlier he had been working in a prawn industry in Hambantota.

Police revealed that Tamil terrorists are visiting outstations under such disguises to carry out spy missions. Tiger terrorists had also been posing as cricketers at several places prior to the Rajagiriya attack, they said.
