Clinton faces LTTE threat in India [20 Mar 2000]

An American Intelligence team has identified the LTTE as the main threat during the United States President Bill Clinton's visit to India since the US government has named the LTTE as a terrorist organisation and banned its operations in the US, the Pioneer, an Indian newspaper reported.

The American advance team of security personnel, who had arrived in India last week prior to the US President's arrival yesterday, have identified the LTTE as the group forcing maximum threat to Mr. Clinton.

The advanced team in a special report to the intelligence agencies has stated six potential modes of threat for the US President during his visit to South Asia.

Among the six modes of threat listed by the American team are, attacks from the underground sewer lines, use of the overhead telegraph and electricity lines, mine blasts, use of car bombs, rocket launchers and other flying objects, including pilotless planes.

"In the Indian sub-continent, there are several instances of the use of the car and human bombs to decimate dignitaries. Such methods have been specially popular with the LTTE, which also takes up contract killings," the report said.

The US intelligence agencies have also asked for fresh inputs on the LTTE from their units in Tamil Nadu.
