Another German national, a millionaire businessman who allegedly ordered the import of an aircraft engine and began to assemble it in violation of the security laws of the country, was arrested by a special division of the Negombo police on Friday. The
suspect, Uli Kurulle, is the managing director as well as a shareholder of a
toy manufacturing factory "Sky Sport" in the Investment
Processing Zone. The wife of this German national is a Tamil woman, through
whom he had gained Sri Lankan citizenship. The
German technical engineer, Uva Baker who assembled the aircraft, held a
partnership in a factory in the Free Trade Zone manufacturing fibreglass
sports material, which was an approved project of the Board of Investment. The
factory had imported fibreglass raw material required for the
manufacture of sports material. The structure of the aircraft had
allegedly been
made using this fibreglass. The
light weight aircraft could be dismantled in a short time and required
only a 200 feet strip for take off or landing. It could easily carry a
weight of 300 kgs. Police said that they have received information that
the 60 horsepower engine of the aircraft was imported under the guise of
raw material required for the factory, and concealed inside a container
bringing raw materials without the Customs Department detecting it. According
to police, the German businessman have already admitted that he had
provided the engine of the small ultra-light plane and given instructions
to assemble it to the German aircraft technical expert. Crime
Detective Bureau, National Intelligence Bureau and the Terrorist
Investigation Department are conducting investigations to determine
whether there any links to the LTTE to the motivation behind the
production of this plane. The two
German suspects are being held in Negombo police under the orders of the
Defence Ministry for further investigations.
