According to police, the German businessman have already admitted that he had provided the engine of the small ultra-light plane and given instructions to assemble it to the German aircraft technical expert.  


Arrested: German businessman involved in aircraft assembly [20 Mar 2000]  

Another German national, a millionaire businessman who allegedly ordered the import of an aircraft engine and began to assemble it in violation of the security laws of the country, was arrested by a special division of the Negombo police on Friday.

 The suspect, Uli Kurulle, is the managing director as well as a shareholder of a toy manufacturing factory "Sky Sport" in the Investment Processing Zone. The wife of this German national is a Tamil woman, through whom he had gained Sri Lankan citizenship.

 The German technical engineer, Uva Baker who assembled the aircraft, held a partnership in a factory in the Free Trade Zone manufacturing fibreglass sports material, which was an approved project of the Board of Investment.

 The factory had imported fibreglass raw material required for the manufacture of sports material. The structure of the aircraft had allegedly been made using this fibreglass.

 The light weight aircraft could be dismantled in a short time and required only a 200 feet strip for take off or landing. It could easily carry a weight of 300 kgs. Police said that they have received information that the 60 horsepower engine of the aircraft was imported under the guise of raw material required for the factory, and concealed inside a container bringing raw materials without the Customs Department detecting it.

 According to police, the German businessman have already admitted that he had provided the engine of the small ultra-light plane and given instructions to assemble it to the German aircraft technical expert.

 Crime Detective Bureau, National Intelligence Bureau and the Terrorist Investigation Department are conducting investigations to determine whether there any links to the LTTE to the motivation behind the production of this plane. 

The two German suspects are being held in Negombo police under the orders of the Defence Ministry for further investigations.
