New
board for state newspapers [21 Mar 2000]
Two new
members have been appointed to the Board of Directors of Associated Newspapers
of Ceylon Ltd, four board members to facilitate the restructuring of the
organisation and a
probe into allegations of corruption.
A media
release from the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Media said
yesterday that Mano Tittawella and Saman Ediriweera were the new directors
appointed to inquire into the irregularities including an alleged fraud in
the acquisition of six printing machines and equipment worth Rs. 222
million. Two more directors will be selected at the Annual General
Meeting. '
The
former directors had tendered their resignations in deference to the
wishes of Minister Samaraweera's appointment of a committee with the
objective of effecting a restructuring process at ANCL to facilitate its
transformation into an efficient and profitable organisation, the release
said.
The
outgoing directors had praised the Minister's attention to the allegations
of corruption and had stated they would extend their fullest co-operation
towards the whole process.
The
Minister has directed the new Board of Directors to probe these
allegations of corruption and submit a report to him at the earliest.
Mr.
Samaraweera would also be handing over the investigations to the Criminal
Investigations Department (CID), the release said.
