Commonwealth to investigate 'distorted' CPU news item on Sri Lanka
[22 Mar 2000]

Commonwealth Secretary General Chief Emeka Anyaoku, responding to a complaint by Posts, Telecommunications and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera that a news item and a related editorial in the February 2000 issue of the Commonwealth Press Union ( CPU) News tarnished the image of Sri Lanka, stated that necessary follow ups would be instigated to look into the matter with the Commonwealth Press Union.

Secretary General Anyaoku in a letter to Minister Smaraweera thanked the Minister for his letter, and for bringing to his attention the response of the Sri Lankan Government to the news item and the related editorial.

He further stated that he appreciates the reactions of the Government to the allegations made by the CPU News in respect of democracy and press freedom in Sri Lanka and stated that he has asked the Director of Information and Public Affairs Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat to follow up the matter with the Commonwealth Press Union.

Chief Anyaoku has also stated that he had noted the suggestions for sending a Commonwealth fact finding mission to Sri Lanka, "But given what you have stated in your letter I feel this would not be necessary".
