New portfolios for UNP rebels
[22 Mar 2000]

Rebel UNP Vikalpa group members Sarath Amunugama and Nanda Mathew who were serving as ministers with special assignments were given important new portfolios by President Kumaratunga yesterday.

Dr Sarath Amunugama and Mr Nanda Mathew were sworn-in before President Kumaratunga, Amunugama as Minister of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Development of the Northern Region, and Mathew as Minister of Shipping and Shipping Development.

The two newly sworn-in ministers of the government addressing the media at Minister Amunugama's residence after they took oaths at Temple Trees yesterday afternoon expressed their gratitude to the President for giving them the new portfolios.

The Ministers said that the President had shown confidence in them by awarding them the new appointments.

The two Ministers also said that they would work towards democratising the UNP's party constitution. Referring to their break-away from the party as part of the moves to change the UNP party constitution, they emphasized that the media should expose the constitutions of other parties and compare them with that of the UNP.

The UNP party constitution is shrouded with secrecy, they added.
