A
surprising United Nations cost cutting exercise, which might slash aid to
Sri Lanka by a 50 percent, is causing grave concern. According
to diplomatic sources, many other developing countries have also been
affected by the measures and have made strong protests. Acting
Foreign Minister Lakshman Kiriella, however, told that he was surprised
about such a development, which could mean loss of millions of dollars for
Sri Lanka. The
Foreign Ministry's UN Desk Chief Bernard Gunathilake said they had
contacted Sri Lanka's Permanent Mission in the UN yesterday to obtain
information about the drastic cuts. The
Permanent Mission is headed by an old UN hand, who had earlier served its
legal division for a long period and is now in his seventies. Foreign
Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar is abroad for urgent medical attention
following a crippling bacteria infection he contracted while on a visit to
Cambodia last year.
