Police have sought assistance of the Interpol and Indian narcotics police to carry out further investigations in this regard.  
 


Sri Lanka a transit point for international drug racket

Investigations in to the arrest of a 19-year-old youth in Chilaw along with 40kg of heroin valued at Rs 60 mn have revealed that Sri Lanka is used as a transit point in the international drug trade, said SSP Rathnayake, Director of the Police Anti-Narcotic Bureau.

SSP Rathnayake said that this is the biggest quantity of heroin detected in this country so far.

The high quality "brown sugar" was seized by the Bureau after an intensive surveillance operation called "Operation Deep Sea" conducted by their sleuths in a move to eradicate heavy drug smuggling into Sri Lanka through Tuticorion in India.

The suspect was taken into custody along with the record contraband, which had been carefully packed in water-proof bags covered with rexine.

The heroin bags had been transported from India by boat and landed on the beach at Chilaw when the detectives seized the youth and the contraband.

The Bureau is searching for two other men said to be the step-father and uncle of the arrested youth, and who are also suspected of involvement in the drug racket.

Police have sought assistance of the Interpol and Indian narcotics police to carry out further investigations in this regard.
