The Tamil
people of the North and East are to voice their yearning for peace
during a peace march this Saturday in Jaffna, said Fr C.G. Jayakumar of
the People's Counsel for Peace and Goodwill (PCPG). The
spokesman for the PCPG said that the march for peace will urge the
government and the LTTE to begin negotiations with the mediation of a
third party. The March
will start from the famous historical Nallur temple urging an immediate stop
to the war. The
organisation also hopes to send a memorandum to President Kumaartunga and
foreign diplomats in Colombo. "We
wanted a mediator just not only for the negotiations but more importantly
for the implementation of the negotiation," said Fr. Jayakumar. The PA
government has expressed its determination to achieve peace by
holding continuous talks with minority parties and now the opposition
party regarding the political proposals of the government to resolve the
ethnic conflict. "But
the LTTE is doing their best to disrupt the whole process with their
escalating human violence as a backlash against the government and the
Sinhalese people," government sources said. However, the Tamil people have become weary of the continuing war, especially those who are living in border villages and in LTTE controlled areas. Numerous
reports indicate that the
Tamils themselves "suffer from both sides", becoming victims of the LTTE, who
use them as "shrouds" in their violent attacks against the people of the
country.
