Deadly cough syrup racket
[23 Mar 2000]

The Drugs Regulatory Authority (DRA) took action against a drug company importing a cough syrup "Flemnil" which has been described by medical experts as deadly.

The DRA after seeking advice from the Attorney General (AG) were able to take necessary action against the racket.

Several cough syrup bottles have been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department for further investigations.

The DRA officials said that Dr. B.G.D. Bujewansa's warnings regarding the cough syrup in the Island newspaper were correct.

The bottles seized from pharmacies island wide, were of different sizes and their contents of different color, said DRA officials.

Out of the 130 Flemnil bottles seized, only a few bottles had caps bearing the acronym, RB, which stood for Raptacos Brett, the Indian company that manufactures the drug.

Stoppers of other Flemnil bottles had the logos of Indian Herbal Maker (IHM) and Parker Robinson.

"The packs the bottles have come in are also of different colours and sizes," DRA officials said. Also they said that further details would be revealed after the Indian manufacturers' response regarding the racket.

"We think the Flemnil label has been used to sell other syrup bottles which were probably date expired," they stated.
