The National Joint Committee spokesman Dr. Piyasena Dissanayake said yesterday that even they don't like the idea of women and children being checked all over the country, the situation that the LTTE has created gives no choice.

Lawyers talk to 'stripped' woman suspect detained by police
[23 Mar 2000]

A group of lawyers were allowed by the police to talk with the woman detained after last Saturday's security check which raised controversial comments from certain sections of the society.

The three member group interested in human rights and related matters had gathered details relating to the security check near Muttiah Park.

During the meeting the woman said that her soldier husband had been killed in an accident outside the war zone three years ago and her child had been handed over to a children's home at Anuradhapura and since then she had moved to Colombo where she had been engaged in prostitution, said Chief Inspector Jagath Jagodarachchi yesterday.

The delegation who had inquired about the manner in which the security check was conducted was told by the woman that only the top part of her salwar kameez was raised.

The check had been carried out since she had failed to produce her national identity card at the check point. "She failed to answer questions and stood without making any movements," said police officials.

Mr. Jagodaarachchi said that nobody blames the LTTE for sending women suicide bombers. "They blame police and armed forces for checking suspects to identify these bombers".

The National Joint Committee spokesman Dr. Piyasena Dissanayake said yesterday that even they don't like the idea of women and children being checked all over the country, the situation that the LTTE has created gives no choice.

"People who talks of human rights of suspects never raise their voices against terrorist brutality," he said.
