Rising
Tiger terror against Tamil civilian population [28
Mar 2000]
Tiger harassment of Tamil civilians
have escalated in recent weeks in a variety of attacks ranging from from
looting to torture and summary execution, security officials said.
Officials described incidents such
as one on Sunday, March 26, in which a 48-year-old woman was shot dead by
terrorists in Batticaloa. Her son-in-law, a former member of PLOTE, had
been shot dead by terrorists only a few days before.
Recently, terrorists have also
entered a computer institute at Mutur and removed three computers with
accessories.
A three wheeler belonging to a
civilian was also forcibly taken away on Saturday in Trincomalee by the
terrorists along with the driver who was later released.
This callous attitude of the
terrorists towards their own people has raised fear in the minds and
hearts of the ordinary Tamil civilians, military officials said.
They also said that Tamil refugees
in the Army camps have expressed their frustration that the Tigers had
created.
Terrorists have even started to
attack innocent Tamil farmers who attempt to harvest their paddy lands in
order to create hardships to civilians living under the security forces.
Many civilians are victims of the
terrorists’ anger towards the government and the military forces. They
are being used as “human shields” and very often the presence of
civilians is ignored by the Tigers when they attack military camps and
public places where Tamils congregate.
In the end it is the small children
and women that suffer more from mortar fire that the terrorists use to
attack villages in order to “get back” at the military forces,
security sources said.
