The Sri
Lankan government signed an agreement with the Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO) to provide US$364,500 worth of agricultural and fisheries
inputs for resettled farmers and fishermen in the Jaffna, Mannar and
Vavuniya Districts, a FAO press release said. The main
objective of this project is to help 6,000 farmer families and 600
displaced fishing families in the three districts. The project also aims
at further improvement of training capacities of the District Agricultural
Training Centres (DATC) in Jaffna and Vavuniya. Food
insecurity of about 6,600 families would be alleviated increasing their
income generation capacity. The
capacity of the DATCs of Jaffna and Vavuniya for assisting displaced
farming families of the region will be strengthened and about 1,000
farmers will be trained in horticulture production, poultry management and
seed multiplication. Presently,
the farmers are under severe LTTE threat since Tigers frequently attack
farmers to create hardships. However, according to government sources, the
northern people are determined to undergo any difficulty in order to
develop Jaffna with the assistance of the government and the security
forces to create a peaceful atmosphere for which they have been dreaming
of.
