Defense Ministry Spokesman Brigadier Palitha Fernando this morning denied reports that the LTTE had overrun a “key military base,” saying that the terrorists had only taken a small coastal watchpoint. Reports indicating that security forces had lost a major “military complex” were completely inaccurate, said Brigadier Fernando, who described the abandoned base as “small.” A defense ministry release last night said that in view of the ground situation around Maruthankerni, security forces had made a tactical withdrawal to the south west of the lagoon, and had consolidated along the lagoon front. Brigadier Fernando also denied reports that the Main Supply Route, the A9 Jaffna-Kandy Road, had been breached by terrorists. “We temporarily lost control in one section two days ago, but regained it. The Tigers have not breached the MSR again since,” Brigadier Fernando said.
