MSR completely under army control
[30 Mar 2000]

The Main Supply Route (MSR) linking Jaffna with the key SLA base of Elephant Pass remains completely under army control and was highly unlikely to be taken by the LTTE, army spokesman Brigadier Palitha Fernando said this morning.

Brigadier Fernando denied reports that the MSR was currently breached at any point, and said that the army had recaptured the entire area two days ago and had successfully begun clearing large adjacent areas.

“We are established in the south west and the north east of the MSR. There are no terrorists anywhere there,” Brigadier Fernando said.

Several recent reports have laid what has been described as “excessive significance” on the breaching of the MSR. However, Brigadier Fernando said that, in any case, troops were not using the MSR prior to Tuesday’s terrorist attack which had temporarily breached the route.

Brigadier Fernando said that an earlier suspicion of mines in the area had led troops to rely on an alternative supply route, which they continue to use now.

However, Brigadier Fernando said that with clearing operations successfully underway, mines along the MSR were unlikely to present a problem any longer.
