Troops consolidate after inflicting heavy Tiger losses
[30 Mar 2000]

Security forces ground troops are consolidating in newly established positions along the A9 Jaffna-Kandy Road after inflicting heavy casualties on an abotive terrorist attempt to take the main Elephant Pass base, a defense ministry release said this evening.

The A9, the army’s Main Supply Route (MSR) to troops stationed at the SLA stronghold at Elephant Pass, came under attack during three days of intense fighting with LTTE terrorists.

Security forces however overcame the attack, in which the A9 MSR was temporarily breached.

Terrorist transmissions monitored by army forces confirm that the LTTE cadres have suffered heavy losses during the three days of fighting.

The transmissions also indicated that several LTTE vehicles and boats had been destroyed by security forces in the course of the confrontation.

Intelligence reports from Sangupiddi and Nagathivaithurai indicate that a large number of boats anchored in the area were damaged by suspected SLA artillery fire.

The release quoted casualty figures of 5 officers and 80 soldiers killed, and 15 officers and 203 soldiers wounded. A further 16 officers and 379 soldiers have suffered only minor injuries.

All the injured have been evacuated for treatment at Palali Army Hospital.
