Norway : New appointee for Sri Lankan peace effort
[31 Mar 2000]

The Norwegian government appointed Erik Solheim from the Socialist Left Party to assist the Sri Lankan government in country's peace process.

He has been appointed as a special advisor to the Department of Foreign Affairs since he has worked in the same capacity for the former Foreign Minister, Knut Vollebaek, on an unofficial basis. He will work directly under the political leadership of the department.

Mr. Solheim has been given leave of absence from his position as member of parliament. He is to start his new job as special advisor on Monday.

Meanwhile, pressure had been building on the Sri Lankan government regarding whether the peace process would continue with Norwegian involvement after the recent change in Norway's government.
