Buddhist prelates to protest against talks with the LTTE on Thursday
[03 Apr 2000]

The Chief Buddhist prelates of the three Nikayas are scheduled to lead a protest rally against proposed talks between the government and the LTTE, assisted by Norway.

Their demands would be placed before the people at a public meeting presided by the Mahanyaka Theras at Colombo Y.M.B.A. premises at Borella on Thursday afternoon.

According to a spokesman, the key demand would be to protect the unitary character of Sri Lanka.

A demonstration and a protest march has also been organised.

The spokesman also said that conditions apart from the unitary state are the non-merger of the north and the east and that no part of the country should be regarded as any body's homeland.

At the meeting a resolution is to be passed calling upon the government and the opposition not to negotiate with the LTTE and that they should keep in mind the seven non-negotiable conditions spelt out by the Sinhalese.

The conditions are to be put to President Kumaratunga and UNP leader who have so far held several rounds of talks in a bid to reach a consensus on constitutional reforms.

The Jathika Sanga Saba, the National Joint Committee and the National Movement Against Terrorism will also be among the groups taking part at the protest rally.
