Frustration against peace process mounts
[05 Apr 2000]

As Tiger attacks on government and security forces escalates, frustration towards the peace process among the people are evident in their recent protests against Norwegian assisted peace effort and the constitutional reforms.

Certain eruptions have taken place in the society against negotiations with Tigers since people have lost confidence in achieving peace. The brutal killings of the LTTE when the government and the people are determined to come to a settlement, had been the major cause for this changeover.

Meanwhile, the Buddhist Mahanayakas are to stage a protest tomorrow against the proposed constitutional reforms as well as the Norwegian role in talks between the government and the LTTE.

Defying a personal request by President Kumaratunga the Mahanayakas have decided to protest against the new reforms. The signs are that more forces are rallying round the pro-Sinhala Buddhist movement which is rapidly gaining ground.

However, the government is still firm with their decision to go ahead with the peace effort after arriving this far.

According to political sources, the government is determined to end the on-going war, after considering the destruction it is causing to the whole nation.
