Norway To Repatriate Failed  Asylum Seekers
[05 Apr 2000]

Norway entered into a bilateral agreement with Sri Lanka to repatriate Sri Lankan nationals who do not obtain the right of residency in Norway, the Foreign Ministry announced yesterday.

According to Ministry sources, the agreement was a definite signal of not only Norway's intention to repatriate failed asylum seekers, but also reflects the improvement in the human rights situation in Sri Lanka.

"Letters constituting an agreement were exchanged earlier last month, between Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Norway, Mrs, Sarala Fernando and the then Norwegian Foreign Minister Knut Vollebaek", a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

Earlier this year, Norway stated that it would work to bring both the LTTE and the government to the negotiating table, in order to put an end to the war.
