SARI, introduced by President Clinton in Sri Lanka

The South Asian Regional Initiative (SARI) introduced by U.S President, Bill Clinton, during his recent visit to South Asia will also be supported in Sri Lanka, through a Programme of activities, the U.S Embassy in Colombo said, yesterday.  

According to a statement released by the Embassy, a total of 50 million U.S dollars in funds will be made    available for regional programmes, during the next four years. 

The programmes include, the development and promotion of clean and renewable energy resources, which include natural gas and solar power. 

In addition, 1.6 million dollars in new funding will be made available to fight against what President Clinton calls "a modern form of slavery"; international trafficking in women and children. 

These programmes will be funded and implemented, throughout the region, by the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID).
