The UNP,
was absent when the Inland Revenue Bill, a significant proposal, was
passed yesterday in Parliament, after the opposition walked out defeating
the government's motion to dissolve the Paddy Marketing Board. The
opposition party demanded the government to resign since it was defeated
by three votes when the vote was taken on the resolution to dissolve the
Paddy Marketing Board. When the
Inland Revenue Bill was put to the House, the UNP was absent and it was
passed with amendments. Minister
of Justice, Constitutional Affairs, Ethnic Affairs and National
Integration, and Deputy Minister of Finance Prof. G.L. Peiris referring to
the importance in amending the Bill said, "A committee was appointed
to revise the act and to remove its redundant feature. They have found
that certain provisions were quite outdated and we are now seeking
provision to bring in line the act in the 1979 amendment. It is only a
rearrangement of what is existing". Minister
of Internal and International Trade and Food Kingsley T. Wickremaratne
said, "Although there were certain shortcomings in the GST we are
remedying them. Even countries like Canada took some time to come into
terms with GST".
