IRANU Buddhist delegation asks Norway to expedite peace process
[07 Apr 2000]

A delegation of Buddhist priests of the Inter Religious Alliance for National Unity (IRANU) yesterday requested the Norwegian Ambassador to expedite the government's peace effort.

The delegation met the Ambassador at his office in Colombo and urged the Norwegian government to create a favourable environment to hold peace talks by encouraging the Tigers to stop its military offensives, a move which would subsequently be reciprocated by government troops.

IRANU Co-convenor Professor Ven. Kumburugamuwe Vajiranana Thera during a press conference held prior to the meeting said that his organisation was committed to peace and condemned all forms of anti-peace movements in the country.

He said that the demand by certain organised forces to end the war by military means is improper for a country like ours where human values are considered supreme.

"It is against Buddhism and the country's age old cultural values," he said.

The Thera thanked members of all political parties specially the government and the opposition for the consensus that was taken by them towards creating national peace.

The Bishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Kenneth Fernando said certain forces try to show that the Christian Church of Norway was behind the peace mediation.

"No country in the world today can be named as a Christian country, so the Norwegian Government too is not influenced by the Church. People in Europe are fast changing and not so devout to gild Christian States today," Bishop Fernando said.

Rt. Rev. Fernando denied the allegations.

The delegation handed over a message of gratitude over the Norwegian's role.

The IRANU Co-convenor Ven. Watinapaha Somananda Thera said the solemn duty of the bhikkus and all other peace loving people is to support any local or foreign forces to enable them to summon the main conflict groups to negotiations, convince them of the tragedy and force them to tread the path of peace.
