A group of suspected LTTE cadres attacked a police guard post at Moragalla junction, Gampola in the early hours yesterday killing one of the five police constables on duty. The group attired in Army uniforms had come to the post and opened fire at the police post. The wounded home guard was admitted to Kandy hospital. The two T56 guns in possession of the constable and the home guard had been removed by the attackers. Gampola police along with Nawalapitiya and Hatton police have now launched a search operation to track down the attackers. Police stated that a special team from police headquarters arrested five men, including three Army deserters for questioning. But it was not clear whether these men were involved in the attack, they said. Police
suspect LTTE to be involved in the attack.
