Trade unionists will launch a campaign next week, by taking to the streets of Colombo, demanding an early conclusion of the on-going negotiation process to end the war, sources said. The Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU), the umbrella body of 28 major labour organisations, decided to launch this campaign, yesterday, against the "extremist elements" who are blocking a negotiated settlement to end the war, JCTU Convener, Local Government and Provincial Council Minister, Alavi Mowlana said. In order to get a louder plea for peace, they are trying to get the co-operation and support of other trade union organisations outside the JCTU, as well, the Minister said. The protest campaign will include picketing and satyagraha, in the city of Colombo and its suburbs. " Our intention is to start this campaign before May Day, since it is at the top of the priority list of those who really love peace", he said. "We should take necessary steps to back any
negotiation to end the war and we, as trade union leaders should take
action to educate the masses on such a political process ", All
Ceylon Commercial and Industrial Union, General Secretary, S.Siriwardhana,
said.
