Justice, Constitutional Affairs, Ethnic Affairs and National Integration Deputy Minister Dilan Perera told a delegation of family members of missing servicemen yesterday, that the government would send a delegation to meet the LTTE to discuss the fate of captured personnel. After meeting the 12 member delegation at his ministry last week, the Deputy Minister had reiterated government’s decision to send representatives to meet the LTTE and explore the possibility of securing the release of detained personnel. Even though the LTTE extended their willingness to meet a government delegation to discuss the fate of the captured men, the recent LTTE attacks had slowed down the government's actions regarding the matter. Political observers too have warned the selfish motives of the LTTE behind the willingness to release the POWs out of a large number of prisoners who are suffering in the hands of the LTTE. Therefore the government despite repeated calls by associations for missing police and servicemen was forced to delay sending a delegation to the LTTE held area of the Wanni because of the recent escalation of violence by the LTTE, government sources said. According to the delegation, there are over 1000 police and servicemen in LTTE custody although the LTTE has admitted the presence of less than 20 personnel in their hands.
