North East doctors to launch indefinite strike
[18 Apr 2000]

More than 1,500 assistant and registered medical officers around the country is to launch a two-day token strike from Wednesday supporting the north east doctors, demanding solutions to several long standing problems including payment of an incentive allowance which is being paid to other medical officers and dental surgeons in the province.

Health Ministry officials said that already a study has been called for, regarding the demands and that an immediate discussion would take place very soon.

As the ministry was unable to take financial decisions unilaterally it would have talks with the Treasury tomorrow, Health Ministry Secretary C. Abeygunasekara said.

Society of Registered and Assistant Medical Officers (SRAMO) President Dr. K.M. Zahir said that the Health Minister's decision to pay an incentive allowance to other doctors in the province leaving the AMOs out was not fair as they too worked under the same conditions. More than 250 AMOs worked in the area performing almost the same tasks and duties as others, Dr. Zahir said.

He also stated on the lack of teachers to give training to AMOs and also accused the ministry for not taking any steps to release the results of a diploma examination conducted in 1997.

However, the GMOA claimed that there was no necessity for more AMOs as the grade was created when there was a shortage of graduate doctors. More than 800 doctors were coming out of medical faculties annually and there was no need for that grade anymore.

Even the Health Ministry had decided it was not worth to spend money to train them, a spokesman said.
