More than 40 national and Sinhala Buddhist organisations together with several environmental groups are to form a new political party on April 26. "We will fight for the lost rights of Sinhalese without denying the basic rights of any of the minorities in the country," UNP parliamentarian Thilak Karunarathna who will be appointed as the general secretary of the new party said. He further said that this party would mainly focus on the ongoing conflict in the North and East. Both the government and the opposition are inactive about the conflict and both sides were incapable of finding a solution, he stated. In addition to seeking a permanent solution to the ongoing conflict, this party will be engaged in environmental issues. "I like to say that this will be a green party," he said. President's Counsel S.L. Gunasekara will be elected president of the new party. The convenor of the National Movement Against Terrorism (NMAT), Patali Champika Ranawaka has been selected as the national organiser of the party. Mr. Ranawaka declined to give the names of organisations that would be involved in the new party. However, he said that all the organisations under the banner of the National Joint Committee, NMAT and Sinhala Veera Vidahana will collaborate in this exercise. "Forming of this political party will be similar to the formation of the SLFP in 1951. At that time both leftists and the UNP did not want to take national issues seriously and that paved the way for the formation of the SLFP. Likewise, the new political party is the result of the inability of the government and the opposition to bring an end to the conflict," he said. The name of the new party will be disclosed on April 26.
