Two train engines and two compartments were blasted yesterday by the LTTE by a landmine placed on the Vavuniya railway track on Sunday night. The explosion had occurred when two trains coupled together were returning to Anuradhapura after having dropped their passengers at Vavuniya. The three-kilogramme bomb had been laid on the railway track 500 meters from the Vavuniya station. Train services between Colombo and Vavuniya were cancelled yesterday due to the explosion. The two engine drivers and their assistants were injured and were admitted to the Vavuniya hospital. Transport Minister A.H.M. Fowzie yeaterday blamed Railway Department officials for placing the Colombo-Vavuniya intercity train and the Rajarata Rajina train under risk if terrorist attack. Minister Fowzie said that he had directed railway officials not to take the Colomvo-Vavuniya intercity train back to the Anuradhapura station for night parking. They had been instructed to park the empty train at Vavuniya for the night since it was targeted by terrorists last year when it was on its way back to Anuradhapura. A special team is on the process of repairing and clearing the track and also attending to the damaged locomotives and the carriages. Train services are expected to be resumed back to normal during the course of today.
