The ongoing police investigations have revealed that a spectator among the audience had thrown the grenade during a largely attended musical show on April 12 night at MacHeyzer stadium in Trincomalee. Three students had been among the ten Tamils and Muslims killed in the attack. Approximately 90 Tamils and Muslims were wounded. According to police some people had reacted violently when the organsiers had requested them to force those who did not buy tickets out of the ground. A police officer said that there were many arguments between Tamil youth and the organisers. The programme was organised by a Tamil television channel and had not attracted Sinhalese in their numbers, police said. In some instances, stones were thrown at the stage and the organisers and some youth were seen threatening organisers trying to sell tickets. Police said that there could have been many armed persons in the ground as no security checks were done prior to people being allowed into the ground. The musical show had attracted many armed groups operating along with the services and ex-members of various militant groups living in Trincomalee apart from the LTTE. No arrests have been made so far.
