In a joint communique to Norwegian Ambassador in Sri Lanka Jon Westborg, ten leading Buddhist prelates have asked the Government of Norway to urge the Government and the LTTE to create an atmosphere suitable for peace talks, sources said. The Buddhist prelates belonging to the Inter-Religious Alliance for National Unity have also drawn the attention of the Norwegian envoy in Colombo to urge the Government and the LTTE to agree to a military ceasefire. According to the prelates, it is with the objective of ushering in peace that President Kumaratunga has commenced a process of dialogue with all the mainstream political parties with the aim of establishing a national consensus. The two mainstream political parties have agreed to discuss these issues transcending the barriers of partisan political considerations. It is also mandatory to get the LTTE to the negotiating table as well, while a consensus between the two major political parties and also the minority parties has been an essential prerequisite for peace negotiations, they said. The prelates have expressed their appreciation and gratitude of the role that the Norwegian government has played. " The Norwegian Government has been instrumental in a process of creating mutual trust and confidence building at a time of ravaging war. We are also aware of the resilience that the Government of Norway displayed at a time when the peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine were about to breakdown", the prelates said.
