A new communications satellite has been named after science fiction guru Arthur C.Clarke by a European satellite operator, recently, sources said. The Paris-based European Telecommunications Satellite Organisation's (EUTELSAT) newest satellite, SESAT will also be known as the Clarke Satellite. It was launched into geostationary orbit on Monday, sources said. " As the 'father' of geostationary orbit, that is home to all our satellites, we are very proud to dedicate this satellite to Sir Arthur C.Clark," EUTELSAT Director General, Giuliano Beretta said last week. Clarke who has made Sri Lanka his home since 1956, turned 82 in December and has been the one to predict geostationary satellites and publish his theory of communication satellites in 1945. He was born in Minehead, England, in 1917, and later came to Sri Lanka, where he has been honoured as a "resident guest"; with his own Science Institute named after him and also made the Vice Chancellor of a university. Sources claim that he has since been regarded as a space-age visionary and is one of science fiction's best known authors with more than 80 books to his credit. Usually, in a geostationary orbit, a satellite moves in a circle around the equator once every 24 hours appearing from earth to not be moving. Although Clarke is suffering from post-polio syndrome and also has hearing difficulties, he is expected to participate in the official inauguration of his satellite via satellite link-up. According to sources, the satellite is now in geostationary orbit 36,000 kilometers above the earth and will go into service from July.
