'Sihala Urumaya', a new Sinhala nationalist party will be officially launched next Wednesday, sources said. Lawyer-turned-politician, S.L Gunasekera has been selected as its Chairman, along with UNP parliamentarian, Tilak Karunaratne, who will be resigning his seat next month, as its Secretary General. Several other MPs will also join him, Karunaratne claims. Meanwhile, Champika Ranawake, National Movement Against Terrorism (NMAT) convener has been selected as the organiser if the party. According to Ranawake, the party was organised to safeguard the rights of the Sinhala nation and it is the collective effort of more than forty Sinhala and environmental groups. The party could be called a green nationalist party as it would emphasize on nationalist as well as environmental aspects, he said. The party will then apply for recognition as a political party, he said. Earlier the Sinhala Veera Vidahana group was known to be trying to get itself registered as a political party, but now it is likely to support the new party, sources said.
