Ban on transport of potatoes to North to boost business of Jaffna farmers
[19 Apr 2000]

The transportation of potatoes to Jaffna was suspended for three months to assist Jaffna farmers to sell their produce at a reasonable price, acting Minister of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction for North, P. Sumathipala said on Friday.

Jaffna farmers have gathered a rich potato harvest in this season which can adequately meet the demand of the Jaffna population, he said.

Jaffna farmers had appealed to the Government not to send potatoes on hearing that a group of businessmen were planning to transport a consignment of potatoes there.

Meanwhile, 70 lorry loads of onions, have also been sent to Colombo from Jaffna which will reach Colombo in the middle of this month, he said.

Arrangements have also been made to send a large consignment of bananas to Colombo by the end of this month, Mr.Sumathipala said.
