Bunkers, illicit brew discovered near President's residence
[20 Apr 2000]

Two huge underground bunkers inside a house, within the tight security zone of President Kumaratunga's residence was raided yesterday noon by the Colombo Central Police Vice Squad.

The police found around 10,000 bottles of "kasippu," unlawful distilled spirits, buried inside the bunkers. The underground operation was located within 200 meters of President's high security Temple Trees.

It had taken several hours for police to locate the two bunkers as it was cleverly built inside a house and was covered with an almirah to shield its existence. Police said that they used a water pump to drain out kasippu and the balance was destroyed by pouring Kerosene oil in to the pits.

Meanwhile, the police are looking for the suspect believed to be an employee of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) who operated the kasippu den in the heart of Kollupitiya. The suspect had disappeared after the raid. However, a man guarding the kasippu den was arrested.
