More than 500 people donate blood for wounded soldiers
[24 Apr 2000]

More than 500 people donated blood on Sunday in response to an appeal made to treat the large number of wounded soldiers in heavy fighting in the north.

The National Blood Bank stated that a large number of donors queued up on Sunday to donate blood.

"The blood bank will be kept open for extended hours tomorrow too because of the overwhelming response we had today," a spokesman for the blood bank said.

According to the defence ministry 79 soldiers were killed and 422 wounded when government forces fought against the Tigers. Troops have withdrawn from their key Elephant base and fighting with the Tamil Tigers rage at the gateway to northern Jaffna.
