Response to calls for blood donations
[25 Apr 2000]

Hundreds of volunteers, including Buddhist monks, queued outside hospitals on Monday to donate blood to treat wounded soldiers.

Hospital officials stated that the public responded patriotically to help the wounded soldiers injured during fighting in the north.

Meanwhile, Tigers claim that the army suffered over 1000 persons killed in action. But military officials denied this and stated that this figure is exaggerated just as the claim that the rebels had captured a large number of armaments.

"The LTTE was unable to capture anything because troops destroyed everything," Army Chief Lieutenant General Weerasooriya said yesterday evening at a press conference.

Over 100 officers and men had been placed missing in action but small groups of men continue to surface, he revealed. "At least 17 personnel came in today," he said.

Military sources denied reports about the army suffering a large number of deaths and stated that they wouldn't have asked for so much of blood if the number of deaths were high.
