Elephant Pass capture means Tigers want to take : Ranil Wickremasinghe
[26 Apr 2000]

The LTTE could join proposed peace talks from a strong bargaining position after capturing the strategic Elephant Pass base, said Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, who returned home Tuesday after a tour in India.

The Opposition Leader said that the Tigers had taken over the political initiative with their military success over the weekend.

"The LTTE's capture of Elephant pass is a sign that they want to enter the talks. They will come with more bargaining power," Mr. Wickremasinghe said.

He further blamed the government for military failures and stated that the soldiers' lives are in jeopardy because the military is not given proper leadership.

Tigers may mount further pressure on the northern peninsula of Jaffna after taking Elephant pass, he said.

"We are at a very decisive stage. The next two weeks will be very crucial," he added.
