Five suspected LTTE allies arrested in Piliyandala

A group of five persons comprising of Tamils and Muslims were arrested on Monday, when they had purchased food items to the value of Rs. 60,000 at a supermarket in Piliyandala using a credit card belonging to another, police said.

The suspects being residents of Vavuniya and Colombo had used the credit card of a Canadian resident, sources said. Also, having bought consumer items to the value of Rs.60, 000, at once, triggered a certain amount of suspicion as to whether the group was transporting food items to the LTTE in the North.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police, W.P Dayaratne, goods including consumer items worth over Rs. 1 lakh has been found in a house in Colombo. The items include milk powder, other dry rations, cigarettes and gold jewellery.

A Muslim belonging to the group escaped during the arrest, police said.
