Security tightened on Indian Airline flights to Sri Lanka
[28 Apr 2000]

Security arrangements have been tightened on all Indian Airline flights to Sri Lanka, since last Tuesday, following suspicions that the LTTE have plans of hijacking an aircraft from Katunayake Airport and taking it to Europe, sources said.

The hijack alert was conveyed to the Ministry of External Affairs by the Indian High Commission in Colombo this month, the Hindustan Times said, also adding that the information has been passed on to all the international carriers operating out of Sri Lanka.

Sources reveal that, any plane if hijacked would be taken to Europe by these Tamil Tigers, with the hijacking being on the same lines as the Ariana Afghan hijacking, in order to seek political asylum.
