Although the Party's move had been criticised as extreme, "the racist LTTE artillery, which was shattering the national pride," could not be stopped without a counter nationalist force, the Party's National Organiser, Patali Champika Ranawaka said. According to the Chairman of the Party, S.L Gunasekera, Sihala Urumaya nationalism was not for the harassment of minorities but for the building of a united Sri Lanka, preserving the rights of the Sinhala community as well as the rights of the minorities. He also said the minorities could rely on Sihala Urumaya and the Party had no intention of cheating them for their votes. "If the LTTE is fighting against Sinhalese dominance, why did they slaughter innocent Muslims who were praying at a mosque in Kattankudy? he asked, adding that they even killed Tamil intellectuals like Neelan Tiruchelvam and Sam Thambimuttu who held different opinions theirs.
