Tigers to hand over 50 bodies through ICRC
[02 May 2000]

ICRC spokesman Harsha Gunawardane said yesterday that the LTTE has offered to return bodies of at least 50 officers and men killed during Sunday's fighting in the Pallai area.

The bodies are expected to be handed over to the army in Vavuniya this evening.

According to Mr. Gunawardane, army authorities have agreed to accept these bodies.

He said that the bodies would be handed over to the representatives of the ICRC at Akkarayan.

Both sides suffered heavy losses on Sunday when fighting intensified after the Air Force started to attack enemy positions with the support of heavy artillery fire.

The LTTE last week returned bodies of 125 officers and men killed in Elephant Pass to army authorities through the ICRC.
