Around six Tiger mortars which failed to hit the Welikanda hospital and police exploded close to the target and a huge massacre was averted, sources said.

The Tigers who had sent the mortars from the jungles close by had aimed five of the mortars at the Welikanda hospital and one at the police, which had missed the targets and fallen close to the said premises.

However, the mortars has hit a Telecom post and a high voltage electrical post close to the police which had caused a great deal of damage with a breakdown in the power supply in the area. The incident had also injured a Telecom worker who was admitted to the Polonnaruwa hospital, police confirm.

The Tigers killed the two soldiers after taking them hostage, sources said, adding that one of the bodies had its head decapitated and the uniform removed and taken away.

The bodies were later brought to the Polonnaruwa hospital, and a search operation was conducted during the course of yesterday, in the area, police said.
