Sihala Urumaya questions security situation
[03 May 2000]

Yesterday, the newly formed Sinhala Urumaya Party urged the government to seek unconditional assistance from friendly countries such as India, Pakistan and China, to prevent the total fall of Jaffna.

In a statement, the Party said that Palaly airport was now vulnerable and thousands of troops were in danger.  Since the Pallai base has fallen, the runway at Palaly is in peril.  If Palaly falls the peninsula will become a death trap for the thousands of troops fighting within, they said.

The loss of Jaffna together with the troops will lead to the naked exposure of Welioya, Mannar, Trincomalee, and Anuradhapura and Puttalam bases for tiger attacks.  The fall of Jaffna will not only lead to the heavy loss of lives, but also will bring about a spell of doom to the very existence of the Republic of Sri Lanka, the Party observed.

The government should concentrate on the extreme gravity of the situation and put strong force on the captivation of the Peninsula.  The party however, urges the government to seek unconditional assistance, saying that any delay would result in the government having no country to rule.
